We are pleased to announce the new name for GBAPS Online School - Katherine Johnson Academy of Enriched Virtual Learning (KJ Academy)!
Johnson was born on August 26, 1918 and recently passed away on February 24, 2020. She was one of three African American students, and the only female, chosen to integrate West Virginia’s Graduate School. Subsequently, she was the third African American to earn a PhD in mathematics. Johnson worked for NASA and was responsible for the mathematical calculations that ensured flight paths and reentry for NASA missions. President Barack Obama awarded Johnson the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian honor.
The choice of name recognizes Johnson's leadership in cutting edge technology and innovation. It also honors her ability to overcome adversity throughout her life to the benefit of mankind.
